We went for a drive outside of town with my parents on Saturday and saw first hand some of the flooding going on around us. We drove just north of town towards Sully but only made it about 15 minutes out of town before we had to stop. Above is the original river (extremely high) from the bridge.
This is slowly turning to the right (the original river pictured above is to the left now) That water out there is over crops.
This is what we ran into. The river was so overflowed it looked like its own river. Had the road not have been closed you would have thought it was its own river. It was amazing to look at but the reality is this is devastating to those living here. It is not standing water either - it was moving very swiftly down stream. We have not been affected by the flood water to our property but we did have some fun on Friday. I got up to check our bank account online since it was payday. The check was not in there. So Jake called our friend (and the manager of our bank) and he said he was swamped because the office that processes everyone's direct deposits is located in Ottumwa and was currently under 4 feet of water. I was sort of panicking because we have enrolled to have our mortgage automatically deducted from our bank account. So about an hour and a half later I finally was speaking to someone that was understanding our problem. I do have to say everyone was very nice and promised there would be no overdraft or late fees. I suppose this will all remain to be seen but by that afternoon our bank worked it all out and had our money in the account and our mortgage was deducted. It was only a minute feeling of helplessness compared to those who have lost all of their personal possessions so we are very thankful once again for where we live!
